I've been meaning to post about this kid for a few days, and now I'm getting around to it. SW Onslow's Kendric Burney has committed to play baseball and football for the Tar Heels.
Several things struck me in reading about Burney. Not only does he play three sports for his high school team, but he started at quarterback and cornerback. Wow. Some other things:

While Burney will play football under John Bunting and baseball under Mike Fox, it was another UNC coach that helped sway the 5-foot-11, 175-pound junior.

"Roy Williams wrote me a not telling me how much I would mean to Carolina," Burney recalled. "When I saw it I didn't know what to do. My eyes just blew up."

Wow. Talk about interoperability. Working together, I mean. This kid's not going to play basketball, yet Coach Williams took the time to write him a note about his potential for the gridiron and diamond Heels. Kudos there.

"I'm gonna go in there with the mentality that I still have a lot of work to do," Burney said regarding the football team. "Go in there thinking I want to take someone's position, get the ins and outs. I have to learn a lot before I can be considered a good cornerback or wherever coach puts me."

This is the kind of kid we need to grab. In-state players that grew up watching the Tar Heels and want to be a part of something great.
And the icing on the cake?

"Baseball, I'm very excited about that. I've been following Carolina baseball for about five years now. Coach Fox and (assistant coach Chad) Holbrook are just amazing. It can't get any better. I see Carolina winning the national championship at least two times in the next five years."

HB- I was just reading and catching up since I've not had a lot of time lately. Thanks for that story on Kendric Burney. Sounds like a good kid. He better save that RW note too...That'll be worth a lot one day! Glad to hear we've got a guy who's enthusiastic and excited about coming, esp. to baseball. Sadly, as fun as it is to watch at Boshemer, it doesn't get the attention it deserves. I did see, however, the GT/UNC game got coverage on ESPN2 last night. Kudos HB.

I go to school with Kenric Burney. I am graduating with him and I am also going to attend UNC with him, if I am accepted and will attempt to walk-on to the football team. That kid is a beast. I've watched him for 4 years. He makes moves at full speed like there is no tomorrow. He looks skinny but will kill you in a heartbeat. He broke a WR's helmet on a pass coverage play against South Lenior High School. He holds the school record (and the state record I believe) for interceptions and interceptions returned for a touchdown. He is also a killer kick return man. If you have questions as to the truth of that, ask Brandon Tate, he played against KB in the 2003 State Championship game, and took a few hits from KB. Ask him if it hurt. I know it hurt at the end of the game when it said SWO 20 Burlington Cummings 14. That Jolly kid from Shelby also took a mean shot from KB in the 2004 state game. A game that KB won MVP and killed Shelby on offense and defense. The final score reflected it too. SWO 49 Shelby 21. Congrats to Shelby for scoring the most points on SWO all season. KB loves to and pick...watch for him next year...
