Cameron Sexton, the 3-star quarterback from Scotland County, announced last week that he will attend UNC. Because he is graduating in December, Cameron will be able to participate in spring drills, and he is able to practice with the team prior to the Continental Tire Bowl. His high school coach, Mark Barnes, hopes he'll redshirt his first year, and Cameron seems to agree. I think that might be a good idea.
Especially if Matt Baker earns the starting job outright, and all signs point to him doing so, Sexton should redshirt. Participation in Spring drills in 2005, and a year of learning the system from the sidelines should help him become a solid quarterback for Fall 2006. It isn't worth Cameron using a year of eligibility if Matt Baker is going to be the signal-caller.
And don't sleep on Cade Thompson, either. Thompson committed to Carolina early, and was just awarded Tennessee's Mr. Football. He recently led his Maryville, TN team to the 4A State Championship. One wonders what Thompson thinks of the Sexton committment.
So what should the depth chart at QB look like? I don't know yet. It looks like Baker is the starter, but what then? Roger Heinz returns for his sophomore season after holding the clipboard with Jared Hall, then Thompson and Sexton. Incoming Bobby Rome, an outstanding athlete, will probably play a different position for the Heels.
We'll have to wait and see before we know exactly who will go under center in 2005. There's a lot of competition, but it's a good problem to have.
