Tonight was the World's Greatest Alumni Game as hosted by Jerry Stackhouse and Antawn Jamison at the Dean E. Smith Center. A bunch of Carolina alumni and former area players hit the floor for charity and fun.
The game turned in to the J.R. Smith show before long. Smith played with the Tar Heels. At first, I was a little elitist about it. "He said he would come and didn't; he shouldn't be playing with the Heels." Well I didn't mind for very long. The kid is incredible. I was disappointed he jumped from high school, but he made the right decision for himself. I don't have official stats, but he had to be the leading scorer. Chris Paul, Daniel Ewing, Dahntay Jones, Darrell Armstrong, Rodney Rogers, Josh Howard, Flip Murray, Rasheed Byrd(?) and Chucky Brown put up a good fight, but fell 139-126. I think that's the right score. Noticeably absent: Rashad McCants, Vince Carter. Allen Iverson was announced as the guest coach for the second half, but did not show. Present but not playing: Antawn Jamison, Marvin Williams, Melvin Scott and Jackie Manuel. All in all, it was a good night. I'll post some pictures soon. Monday, August 22

Well, we didn't need for this to happen. Roger Heinz is hurt. The Tar Heels just got a little bit thinner in the backfield.
As you know, my plan was to redshirt Cameron Sexton, and make him the quarterback of the future. As far as I know, Cameron's still hurting from his broken ankle and is only doing individual drills. Correct me if I'm wrong. So we're already out two running backs (Wilson transfer, McGill injury at least four weeks), and now a backup QB. It's great to be a Tar Heel! What say we just use this season as a practice year? I have high hopes for Matt but he's got to stay healthy. Same with Barrington. We are far too youthful and inexperienced behind those guys. Never fear, dear readers. HeelsBlog has returned from an extended summer hiatus. With football season just weeks away now, look for entries much more regularly than has been the case lately. HeelsBlog has undergone an equipment upgrade (meaning I got a new computer), so look for some more additions down the line, including one announcement that I am particularly excited about. I don't want to reveal too much at this point, but now you know I'm back and ready to go. As always, thanks for reading. Thursday, August 4

Sophomore Vince Wilson, the only Tar Heel with tailback experience, has decided to transfer. I don't know what's going on with Vince, but I wish him the best. I had high hopes for Vince backing up Barrington Edwards at the running back spot. “Vince Wilson has got some things he’s got to do to improve and show that he belongs on that field,” Bunting said. “No. 1, he’s got to know what to do. He’s a tough kid. He’s physical despite his size; we saw that on special teams. He’s got to learn how to be involved in all the pass protections. He’s got to learn to catch the ball well. He’s got to learn to do the things on and off the field that I expect from our football players.” From what Bunting said, there must have been some other issues going on with Vince. He had a chance to make some noise this year, and maybe he recognized the talent coming in 2006 at that spot. Monday, August 1
