Continuing with looking at how Carolina's upcoming opponents fared in Week 1....
Carolina plays Miami in Coral Gables on October 29, game 7 of the season.
The Hurricanes looked like the better team (of two evils) last night in their loss to Florida State. They won in every aspect of the game except in the trenches (Their offensive line vs. Florida State's specifically) and on special teams. If they correct either one of these areas, they win an ugly game. The U won all the offensive categories, and had the better quarterback by far. If they protect Kyle Wright and keep him healthy, he's the quarterback of the future for a college football powerhouse. If they don't, they'll be ripe for more upsets.
The Heels come home for a stretch of three straight home games on Nov. 5, 12 and 19 against Boston College, Maryland and Duke, respectively. The Heels have a shot at going 3-0 during this homestand and should expect no less than 2-1.
Boston College outplayed BYU, but didn't put them away until the fourth quarter. They're back to their 2003 quarterback, and he's a good one. But the Heels will be looking to avenge the Tire Bowl loss, and the fans who turned out in Charlotte will definitely turn it blue in Kenan.
Maryland did not play Navy well, and barely escaped with a three-point win. This is the year Bunting gets one over Friedgen.
Duke is still Duke, and they dropped the ball in a listless performance at East Carolina. Ted Roof will eventually get things rolling in Wallace Wade, but not this year.
The Heels finish the season on Nov. 26 in Blacksburg against Virginia Tech.
As you know, the Hokies left Raleigh with a close win over N.C. State Sunday. The talk of Virginia Tech contending for a national title is premature. Marcus Vick is a good quarterback who will be experienced by Nov. 26. Mike Imoh ran all over the Heels last year. If our boys have any recollection of last year's coulda-woulda-shoulda, they'll be poised to put up a fight. But it's hard to win in Blacksburg.
So there you have it. Of course it's hard to judge opponents one game into the season, but it's what we do here. Your thoughts, feelings, opinions? The Heels' opponents are tough, but there is definitely room for improvement from each of them.
Look for the podcast Thursday evening. Thanks for reading.
