a girl? perhaps. but i was assuming he was just waiting for as long as it took for nc state to get a basketball coach.

The Wolfpack got a basketball coach. As a Wolfpacker and mere guest who enjoys this blog, I am very pleased with Sidney Lowe's selection. Lowe (just a Phil Ford and other great point guards) was the on court coach of the '83 team and has always impressed me as a smart basketball person, a good guy and a positive fellow. He is the right age (someday, Williams and Coach K have to go into the retirement homes) to build the State program into a top 2 ACC contender and there is already a huge amount of enthusiasm for him at the high school level (coaches, sophs and juniors) in NC, SC and VA. Granted, he is unproven and the college coaching game is a challenge under the best of circumstances, but I am very happy he was asked and agreed. I also personally think it is past time that college basketball gives more black coaches an opportunity at the head coaching spot - not just because of race and not as an entitlement - but look at the game - college and even more so the NBA is not the sport of white athletes as it was 20 to 30 years ago. Do I think you have to be black to coach blacks, no! Of course not. But many alumni at many schools are predominantly white and they don't mind rooting for the home team of all or almost all black athletes as long as the man in charge, the coach, is white. Society should be well past that but if you look at several recent searches - and you can include State's and Carolina's - how many black candidates were first or second or even third choice? None. It's inherent in the system and that needs to change. Sidney should not and did not get the job due to being black but I am extra happy that he did and think that will prove to be another of many pluses.

my only concern is lowe's terrible nba record as head coach. something like 26%? but he coached unestablished teams, and college is a very different game. all i'm saying is that i'm concerned. but, all in all, i'm excited. i'm glad to have a guy that the wolfpackers can really get behind. someone vocal and someone who hates carolina as much as the fans (no offense heelsblogger). regardless of how much sendek won, he was never going to do that. i don't think lowe will bring the immediate improvement that roy was capable of, but i think (and hope) that he will get some enthusiasm back in the program, and put us in the right direction.

oh, and it sounds like monte towe may be his assistant coach. we're bringing back all kinds of hometown heroes. now, a lowe & towe team may really amount to something.
